Salsa Fest

I really, really like salsa.

It's been my go-to snack since I was like 12. After school I would come home, grab a bag of chips and a bowl of salsa and park my booty in front of the tv for some good ol MacGyver. Seriously, I did that just about every day.

Not much has changed. I still eat it just about every day - hey, they say spicy food boots your metabolism (too bad chips don't), but I did trade watching Mac for watching my Sweet P.

Anyway, I would say that my favorite food is Mexican but my husband tends to correct me and says it's really just the chips, salsa and queso. He's probably right. I can have it with any meal really, doesn't have to be Mexican.

But there's a MAJOR problem with my love for salsa, you can not find HOT restaurant-quality salsa at the store. Or, at least, I haven't found it yet, oh, and not to mention the chips. Trust me, I have tried just about every stinkin salsa you can buy. I've also tried making my own but haven't been too successful with that either. Such a bummer.

But, alas, there just happens to be a festival devoted to salsa enthusiasts!! This Friday from 5-10pm, downtown Tulsa will host Salsa Fest! I am so excited. As far as I know, it's free to attend but you can pay $5 to get a tasting kit and sample all kinds of different salsas. Also, there will be a chili eating contest, live salsa music, dance lessons and other fun things.

I'm hoping to eat my weight in the tastiest, make-your-nose-run salsa I've ever tasted. I wonder if there will be salsa to buy. That would be awesome.

So, there you have it. You know where I'll be Friday night and if you have an awesome recipe for hot salsa - send it my way or let me know if you've found the good stuff at a store. Thanks!

  1. You and Ben would get along just fine. Ben eats salsa every day, any day. He'll mix it in with his meals too! Have fun at Salsa Fest!

  2. I'll be there too! I heart salsa :) One at the store to try is Maria Rae's. They have it at Reasor's and it's made in OK. I get the medium and it's kinda spicy but not make your nose run. It works for me for "store" salsa, ya know!

  4. oh and on the PW Salsa to make it hotter, I do one mild and one hot can of Rotel. Plus, I use the whole jalapeno including seeds. And I make mine in my blender because it is a lot and then I store it in mason jars to keep it fresh longer.

  5. My husband's uncle has a salsa recipe (that he won't share), but I can't even smell it without my nose catching fire. It is unreal. If you like it that hot, I'm super impressed by you!

  6. I would bring you some salsa from El Fogon! They have the best roasted red pepper salsa and it can be pretty darn hot. It can vary in hotness though since they make it from scrath. But seriously let me know and I will bring you some or meet you somewhere in Tulsa. I work in town so i would be no biggie at all!

  7. Hi! I am a new reader:) - stumbled on you from reading your sister's blog. Love your site!
I have a great, quick, easy salsa recipe if you want to try it sometime! I love using fresh veggies and herbs, but when I need something super quick for Mexican night - I throw together this salsa, and it's pretty darn good for how easy it is:)

2 cans rotel (1 reg and 1 hot), 1 8oz can tomato sauce, 1/2 tsp "Crazy Jane's" seasoning (by the season salt in any grocery store), 1/2 tsp garlic powder, juice from 1 lime, fresh cilantro

Throw it all in a blender and blend, then chill and serve. Or, if you like it chunky, skip the blender.

*Note - using a whole can of hot rotel makes it pretty hot (and I like it hot), so sometimes I do 1/2 of the hot and 1 1/2 regular
